چکیده

We present an interpretation of Dempster-Shafer theory based on the probability of provability. We present two forms of revision (conditioning) that lead to the geometrical rule of conditioning and to Dempster rule of conditioning, respectively.

belief function and the transferable belief model

Beliefs are the result of uncertainty. Sometimes uncertainty is because of a random process and sometimes the result of lack of information. In the past, the only solution in situations of uncertainty has been the probability theory. But the past few decades, various theories of other variables and systems are put forward for the systems with no adequate and accurate information. One of these a...

What is Dempster-Shafer's model?

Several mathematical models have been proposed for the modelling of someone's degrees of belief. The oldest is the Bayesian model that uses probability functions. The upper and lower probabilities (ULP) model, Dempster's model, the evidentiary value model (EVM) and the probability of modal propositions somehow generalize the Bayesian approach. The transferable belief model (TBM) is based on oth...

A Logical Interpretation of Dempster-Shafer Theory, with Application to Visual Recognition

We formulate Dempster Shafer Belief functions in terms of Propositional Logic, using the im plicit notion of provability underlying Demp ster Shafer Theory. The assignment of weights to the propositional literals enables the Belief functions to be explicitly computed using Net work Reliability techniques. Also, the updat ing of Belief functions using Dempster's Rule of Combination correspon...

Comparing Strengths of Beliefs Explicitly

Inspired by a similar use in provability logic, formulas pÂB q and p <B q are introduced in the existing logical framework for discussing beliefs to express that the strength of belief in p is greater than (or equal to) that in q. This explicit mention of the comparison in the logical language aids in defining several other concepts in a uniform way, viz. older and rather clear concepts like th...

Two Views of Belief: Belief as Generalized Probability and Belief as Evidence

Halpern, J.Y. and R. Fagin, Two views of belief: belief as generalized probability and belief as evidence, Artificial Intelligence 54 (3) (1992) 275-317. Belief functions are mathematical objects defined to satisfy three axioms that look somewhat similar to the Kolmogorov axioms defining probability functions. We argue that there are (at least) two useful and quite different ways of understandi...
